Way Beyond the ‘Yellow’ Song

Coldplay breaks hearts again with X & Y

Creative Venues
By Nebi Sanderson

Coldplay It was the Band that made everyone ask back in the year 2000, Who Sings The Yellow Song? And Coldplay made their mark, in the “Yellow” world of acoustic Starsailor meets Travis at a Radiohead concert. And the rest is history for Coldplay’s front man Chris Martin. The band’s first debut Parachutes, as a beautiful collection of happy go lucky depressed melodies…love found, love lost, love unrequited--and the love of the acoustic guitar. This release was not depressed, nor was it’s sales.

Two years later after folding our parachutes and putting them away, Coldplay surprised us with a different take on their sorrowing lyrics and strummy acoustics. In early Fall of 2002, the bands second release A Rush Of Blood To The Head hit shelves with heavy radio play. With hits like the gloomy” In My Place” and the dreamy” Clocks” its proven by ear to be perfectly flawless. This album brought us pianos galore, lyrics about love, loss, “politiks” and even a tear-jerking video “The Scientist”. And alas, three years later, with an Apple a Day and Gweneth Paltrow on arm, Chris Martin’s melodramatic moody movie is back! But wait-- this is no movie. It is a scene on the OC,. Coldplay’s unknown track” Fix You” is confusing teens across America who are too indulged into Seth Cohen to really remember this hauntingly beautiful song. And then they do. Later...

The British Quartet have earned their thrones in the rock world respectively in the ears of those young and old alike. On June 7, 2005 Coldplay brings us another treasure, X & Y. Speed of Sound is the current hit single. A melodic joy that will bring your arm hairs to a rise. Arm hair is optional. "Birds go flying at the speed of sound to show you how it all began/ Birds came flying from the underground/if you could see it then you'd understand".

Indeed, fans will understand. And we do. There are more treats on the album, such as a hidden track dedicated to the late Johnny Cash “Lil kingdom comes”. Possibly the best song on the entire album. Track 02, “What If” is emotional.. If you like the more dramatic Coldplay. It has been said that track 05, “Talk” takes on to the likings of earlier U2. I believe Coldplay just keep on getting better and better. This is, indeed a wonderful album. I still cannot get over my “Rush, Of Blood To The Head“, however this album is already growing on me as it will to other Coldplay fans and I find myself moving forward with the “Speed of Sound”. Check it out.

Grade: A-
