On this Road, All that Glitters Is Not Gold

The Prophecy of Has Beans and accidental joy at Kelly O’Brien’s

What's the Buzz?
By Michael the K

Bob, Zach and friends at Has Beans Open MicLast time I covered my wonderful trip down the yellow brick road to Has Beans and its Saturday night Open Mic. I had such a great time that I have attended every week since then. I can’t believe how each week this little group of fellow musicians, poets and singers work their craft in this intimate space. Some of the performers are found at Second and I week after week.

At times it can take on shades of the grand ole oprey, or a spiritual choir. Other times there are performers such as Prophecy, who emotes feelings of Bjork. There are new people all the time, in fact on many occasions touring acts would stop by to watch and join the festivities. Jam sessions are apt to erupt at any given moment. The coffee and desserts here are delicious, the friendly staff are a pleasure to be around and the atmosphere is extremely comfortable. There is even a sing along at the closing to an old standard called “Irene Goodnight.” The best part is it ends at 9:30 and you still have the plenty of time to explore the night life.

I also had another commitment last Saturday, so after Has Beans I roamed from Old Town to Downtown to check out the clean air benefit at Kelly O’Brien’s. I had a great time with the folks from the Citizen’s Pulp Mill Committee and other local Greens at a surprisingly cozy Fifth Street locale. The audience were the nicest bunch I have come across yet in Humboldt county. The benefit was a success and the food was really amazing. The cuisine was all vegetarian and all natural. The place started to get busy when the Widdershins kicked off the night with a driving sultry set -- just to come back to deliver another rocker later.

There were jams and the usual speeches, but it seemed more like a party than a benefit. Big Earl and the Crying Shame kept the night rocking with several sets of Chicago-style blues. I really enjoyed the change over of musicians from set to set. With that king of trading licks playing, there were some amazing stylings. It’s always good to see that type of progressive attitude. Earl is an impressive figure, in the manner of John Popper, but not as aggressive.

Horns appeared as the night went on and the band took on different textures. The backup musicians were adequate, very much like you would expect in a small town. The star in the band was the bass player, the man walked that bass all over the place, like a pro. There was a huge accident early in the evening in back of the club and it put a little damper on things, but they seemed to get back to normal in a short time. In spite of everything I had a really enjoyable evening from start to finish.
