The Vast Array Of Human Behavior
Poet in Residence
By Martha S. Meade
For
the vast array of human behavior, I offer this:
Some people forgot to take their medicine.
Some people refuse to take their medicine.
Some people refuse to get diagnosed.
Some people are taking too much medicine, illegally and legally.
Some need perhaps, a little more.
Some folks take just what the doctor ordered,
but the five doctors who ordered the ten prescriptions are not talking
to each other.
Some people are taking the wrong medicine.
Some are taking self-prescribed medicines sold by street pharmacists of
dubious and wanting character.
The witches’ brews are mixed up in padlocked attic laboratories
with any
number of industrial ingredients added for - - flavor?
Not really meant for human consumption, much less to be injected into
the vein.
Instead of batwing and snake livers,
Such tasty morsels as lye, detergent, lighter fluid and bug killer are
used
to ‘process the product to new heights of escapism.’
Wow!
Self-inflicted lobotomies blamed on government terrorists and conspirators
out to spoil our fun!
But hey, no one else really is to blame,
We succumb,
We suck into the lie,
We glom on to the spurious hope.
And after all, it is just medicine, not meant to really cure,
But only to deflect, postpone, sooth the symptoms of deeper, more pressing
needs
Of the Spirit, Mind, and Soul.
Oh, pardon me.
…Of the Emotional, Mental, and Physical aspects of humble humanity.
The medicine can not be the cure, just a help, temporary, ephemeral, illusive.
A distraction at best.
So what do we say then?
Is there a better medicine somewhere in the Amazon jungle not yet discovered?
Perhaps, it is not a medicine of any kind we seek.
Two friends of mine, one my 20 year old tutor from South America,
The other an 85 year old women, both in vigorous health, enjoying, grabbing
all life has to offer.
Nothing holding them back from all the possibilities the world can bestow.
Both said, “I don’t take any medicine.
“Medicines are poison.
“I want to know what I’m feeling, when I’m feeling it,
and why I’m feeling what I’m feeling.”
Physically, Mentally, and even Emotionally,
That is what feelings are for, after all.
Otherwise, why have them?
Happy, Sad,
Glad, Mad,
What are we feeling?
Is it too scary to ask?
Too painful to recognize?
Too pathetic to realize?
And really each of the three parts affects the other two.
They are not separated by time, space, or political affiliations.
These aspects of humanity are irrefutably linked.
Spirit, Mind, and Soul intertwine in unmeasured,
Under-examined, and
Ultimately essential ways.
To not accept,
To not peer toward,
To not ponder the option.
Is that an answer?
This can’t be called wisdom,
Or maturity,
Or even thoughtful.
More an arrogance,
A self-righteous direction.
Isn’t it?
Where can we go then?
For the vast array of human behavior, I offer this:
Temporary means just that,
Long term is really, just a lot more fun.
