EPD Warns Of New Phone Scam By Sentinel Staff
The fake caller gives a return phone number actually belonging to an out-of-state business not connected with a phone directory. EPD advises people not to give names, dates of birth, addresses, banking information or credit card information, Social Security numbers or other personal information to unfamiliar callers. Often scam artists portray themselves as representatives of businesses who are “trying to confirm their database.” Those businesses already have the information and won’t contact customers by phone or e-mail to check it. If there are questions about a sales representative, hang up and call the business back at a number found in a phone directory or given by directory assistance.

EUREKA -- Reports of a fake salesman claiming to work for “the yellow pages” who tries to sell a “webhosting subscription” by phone are prompting an alert from Eureka police.
